The Poetry Foundation defines ekphrastic writing as “the imaginative act of narrating and reflecting on the ‘action’ of a painting or sculpture" in which poets can amplify meaning. Together in this workshop, we will explore visual works and expand their visual elements into written language. and expand visual works. By studying ekphrastic works by others as well as visual art, we will write fresh poems that amplify and extend the art's meaning as well as the poem's emotional resonance. From examining artifacts and self-portraits to re-telling history and giving voice, this course offers different methods of writing poetry from visual art. Each week will provide sample poems, a bit of theory, images, further reading, and a prompt relating to that week’s theme.

Teaching Artist

Stacey Balkun

Stacey Balkun is the author of Sweetbitter, three poetry chapbooks, and co-editor of Fiolet & Wing. Winner of a 2021 PEN America grant, her work has appeared in Best New Poets, Mississippi Review, Pleiades, & several other anthologies & journals. Stacey holds a PhD from University of Mississippi, Oxford and an MFA from Fresno State. She teaches writing at The Poetry Barn, the Loft, and the University of New Orleans.
